D-8 Called To Boost Industrial Cooperation

TEHRAN Jan 29(Shana)--Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Mohammadreza Nematzadeh said D-8 countries enjoy great potentials for boosting economic cooperation.

Speaking at the D-8 countries’ meeting of Ministers of Industry, Nematzadeh referred to low level of industrial and trade cooperation between the members calling on them to put boosting cooperation high on their agenda.

He said: "Despite various sanctions imposed against Iran over previous years, Iranian engineers and researchers have been able to achieve great breakthroughs in petrochemicals, advanced technologies, machineries and manufacturing."

Currently oil and gas assume 90 percent of gross domestic projection (GDP) of the country, he said, expressing hope Iran’s industry share in GDP will rise to 20 percent in the near future.

He also noted that industrial development will open many doors towards the private sector.

“Investment in some sectors like car manufacturing, renewable energies and textile are very appropriate spheres for boosting cooperation between D-8 countries”, the minister said.

According to the official, boosting cooperation with other third world bodies like ECO can solve part of economic problems of the region and overcoming challenges.

The D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, also known as Developing-8, is an organization for development cooperation among the following countries: Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey.

The objectives of D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation are to improve member states’ position in the global economy, diversify and create new opportunities in trade relations, enhance participation in decision-making at international level, and improve standards of living.
