Drilling Key to Tapping Hydrocarbon Reserves

TEHRAN March 03(Shana)--NIOC’s advisor Hamid Bovard said drilling make up 50 percent of total cost of developing oil and gas reservoirs across the world.

Addressing the 2nd National Iranian Drilling Industry Congress, he said drilling industry acts as a key for opening the doors towards oil and gas reservoirs.

Referring to operational rigs across the world, Bovard said large numbers of operating rigs is indicative of the importance of drilling sector, noting currently 2.500 rigs are operational in the U.S, more than half of total drilling rigs in the world.

He continued that more than 700 drilling rigs are operational in Asia, of which 450 to 500 rigs are involved in drilling operations in the Middle East, around 12 percent of total operating rigs in the world.

Pointing to the main challenges of drilling industry, advisor to NIOC’s managing director said that weak services, lack of deployment of new technologies, immigration of human resources and management of science are the main challenges drilling sector faces.

Referring to points of strength in drilling industry, he said: "Sitting atop the huge oil and gas reserves and enjoying skilled human forces are the main advantages of Iran’s drilling industry."

Elsewhere in his remarks, he pointed to plunging oil prices as a threat and at the same time an opportunity which has prepared the groundwork for mobilization of domestic capabilities for development of shared oil and gas fields.
