Armenia to Increase Gas Imports from Iran

TEHRAN, July 27 (Shana) – Armenian Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Levon Yolyan said on Tuesday that Armenia is going to increase gas imports from Iran.

Speaking in a meeting with Iranian Minister of Petroleum Bijan Zanganeh on Tuesday, Yolyan said the project for setting up the third line of the 400 kilowatt two-circuit power transmission grid has been going on at an appropriate speed.

“Expansion of relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran is of high significance for Armenia. Iran is a sincere neighbor for Armenia. We have always felt Iran’s goodwill in facing many problems.”

The contract for setting up the line had been signed by the Export Development Bank of Iran (EDBI) and Armenia’s High Voltage Electricity Network (HVEN) company.

According to the contract, EDBI will provide €83 million of the total €107.9 million needed to build the power line. The project is scheduled to be implemented in 18 months to pave the way for the exchange of electricity between Iran and Armenia.

After construction of the third line, it would be possible for the two countries to exchange 700 MW of electricity, thus increasing total volume of power exchanged between the two sides to 1,000 MW.

The third Iran-Armenia power transmission line will be also connected to national power grids in Armenia, Georgia, Russia and Turkey.

After a meeting with Minister of Petroleum Bijan Zanganeh in October last year, former Energy Minister of Armenia Yervand Zakharyan had predicted that the Iran-Armenia 3rd power transmission line project will be complete in 2018.
