Europe Not to Follow US Policy on Iran: MP

TEHRAN, Dec. 08 (Shana) – Presence of giant European oil companies in Iran shows that Europe will not follow US anti-Iranian policy and will continue cooperation with Tehran, a senior Iranian lawmaker said.

Spokesman of Parliament Energy Committee Assadollah Gharakhani made the remarks in an exclusive interview with Shana on Thursday.

The lawmaker noted that inking three cooperation documents with the Royal Dutch Shell on Wednesday proved that Europe is now decides independently and its decision makers do not follow the US policies.

US economic sanctions against Iran has no use anymore, the official added.

He said that presence of international oil giants like Shell and Total in Iran proves that doing business with Iran is now lucrative for the foreign companies.

Several companies from Japan, China, South Korea, Norway, Thailand, Vietnam, UK, Netherland and other parts of the world have declared interest to participate in Iran's oil and gas projects, the MP added.

He said that presence of giant international companies in Iran can bring high technology and investment to Iran and it is a fortune for the Islamic Republic to develop its oil and gas industry.

Managing Director of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) said on Wednesday that Royal Dutch Shell’s signature of a cooperation document with the NIOC is an indication of the ineffectiveness of extension of the Iran Sanctions Act by US congress on leading European companies for working with Iran.

Reacting to the US Congress and Senate’s recent votes to extend the act for another 10 years, Ali Kardor told reporters that Shell’s signing of a memorandum of understanding with the National Iranian Oil Company and the Iranian Ministry of Petroleum on Wednesday showed that international groups are willing to press ahead with efforts to rebuild a presence in Iran.

Noureddin Shahnazizadeh, managing director of the Petroleum Engineering and Development Company (PEDEC) from NIOC and Hans Nijkamp from Shell inked the deal in the presence of NIOC Managing Director Ali Kardor and Britain’s ambassador to Iran, Nicholas Hopton.

Based on the cooperation document, Shell will assess development projects of Azadegan, Yadavaran and Kish oil and gas fields.

Kardor said a tender for entrusting development of Azadegan oilfield will most probably be held in January 2017.

The official said Iranian developers may bid to develop the fields provided that they can lure in a powerful foreign partner in the projects.
