Major Petchem Plant Launched in Western Iran

TEHRAN, March 25 (Shana) -- The western province of Kurdistan saw inauguration of a major petrochemical plant, the biggest industrial project in the province's history, on the first working day of the new Iranian calendar year.

The plant, whose production began in 2005, is built for production of 300,000 tons of light-density polyethylene in a push to complete the petrochemical value-chain in the region.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani as well as Minister of Petroleum Bijan Zangeneh attended the project's opening ceremony on Saturday.

The facility is financed by €257m and IRR3,800 and is touted as one of the key petrochemical projects in western Iran developed in line with Economic Resilience instructed by Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in order to generate jobs and produce value-added items in western, less developed provinces of the country.

The project is one of the 12 projects fed by the West Ethylene Pipeline which carried the ethylene produced by Kaveh Petrochemical Plant in southern Iran.
