According to PIN, in case of the OPEC gas countries do not agree and elect a chairman for the event, that choice will be alphabetical which will give the greatest chance to Algiers.
Considering the key role of Iran within the organizational chart of the forum, it has made great efforts to achieve this goal. The creation of a gas exporting countries forum resembling that of OPEC was an idea presented by the Supreme Leader of the IRI in 2006 after which the proposal was put to the Russian security committee chairman and was welcomed following which the organization was brought into existence.
The permanent location of the organization has been assigned as Doha in Qatar according to the agreements.
The IRI presented its candidate for the post to the gas exporting countries organization last week.
