Gas exports to Turkey rise by 35 percent

Tehran (Shana) - Since the beginning of the Iraninan calendar year 1388 (started 21 March 2009) Turkey has imported 1/5 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Iran, which shows 35 percent increase when compared with corresponding period last year.

Hosain Montazer Torbati,  the manager of dispatching center at the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) said on Tuesday that during cold days of winter, natural gas exports to Turkey doubled in comparison to similar period last year.

He stated that daily gas exports to the neighboring country, through Bazargan border (West Azebaijan province), is amounted to 25 mcm a day and could be increased to the stipulated volume in the contract that is 30 million cubic meters per day. Torbati described gas export process to Turkey in the current year as desirable.

Iran, which sits atop the second largest natural gas reserves in the world, plans to become a reliable gas exporter in the long term.
