Iran's gas exports climb by 35 percent

Terhan (Shana) - Iran's gas exports have increased by 35 percent during the current Iranian calendar year (started 21 Mrarch 2009), says a NIGEC official.

In an exclusive interview with Shana, supplying gas director at National Iranian Gas Exports Company (NIGEC) Mojtaba Shikhbahaee said in case of reducing gas consumption in the country and respecting energy saving it is possible to increase export volume of the strategic commodity. He pointed out that gas imports from neighboring Turkmenistan have declined by 25 percent.

The official said that in Bahman (the month ended 19 February) gas consumption in residential, commercial and industrial sectors averaged 320 million cubic meters per day, which shows 7 percent increase when compared with corresponding period last year.

Shaikhbahaee added: based on NIGEC data, total gas consumption by aforementioned sectors have soared 10 percent year on year.

He further said supplying gas to power plants is underway without any limitation announcing that the sector have consumed 60 million cubic meters of natural gas per day in Bahman.

The official concluded that gas consumption by power plants have averaged 120 million cubic meters per day since the beginning of the Iranian calendar year 1388 (21 March 2009) which shows no considerable change when compared with previous year.
