TEHRAN Jan 22 (Shana): By launching ongoing development plan at Imam Khomeini (Shazand) oil refinery this month, sulfur content of its oil products will be removed largely while at the same time sulfur production will rise by 11 times hitting 650 tons from 60 tons per day now.

The initiative will lower sulfur content of gasoil and gasoline produced at the refinery resulting in upgrading the quality of the gasoil and gasoline produced by the refinery to euro-5 standards and less emissions.

Building isomerization unit of the refinery as the first unit of a domestic refinery under an Iranian license (RIPI license), the first oil refinery having propylene, RCD and RFCC units, production of 11.2 million liters of gasoline per day, installation of the heaviest integrated equipment in an oil refinery in the country weighing 1.470 tons are among the specifications of Imam Khomeini oil refinery.

Removing 2.5 million cubic meters of soil, concrete close to 315 thousand cubic meters, 43 thousand tons of reinforcemen, four thousand kilometers of cabling, using 130 thousand tons of equipment and steel structures, welding of 650 kilometers of pipe, welding 228 kilometers of storage facilities plus fabrication and installation of 61 storage tanks are among the works done in the project that covers a 300 hectare area.

All the equipment of the project has been procured by domestic manufacturers, of which 60 percent belong to manufacturers from Central Province and 38 percent by Shazand town’s manufacturers.

Upon becoming operational, the development plan as the largest ongoing project by National Iranian oil Engineering and Construction Company will change Imam Khomeini oil refinery into the largest producer of gasoline in the country.

The oil refinery also will be the first one in the country changing 90 percent of its crude intake into valuable products including liquid gas, petroleum, gasoil, propylene and kerosene and just 8.4 percent of its products will be fuel oil and bitumen.

Increasing daily refining capacity of the refinery to 250 thousand barrels from 170 barrels, changing the feedstock from 100 percent of Ahvaz-Asmari crude oil to a blend consist of 55 percent from Ahvaz-Asmari and 45 percent from heavy crudes of Northern Dezfoul, reducing daily fuel oil production from 38 to 15 thousand barrels, boosting the quality of the products compatible with euro-4 specifications and production of less pollutant materials are among the other targets of upgrading plan of Imam Khomeini oil refinery.
