Iran Taking Run-up to Produce 1b cm/d of Gas

TEHRAN April 14 (Shana)--Iran enjoys the necessary capacities to make a giant leap in production of natural gas up to one billion cubic meters a day, said Iranian Petroleum Minister.

Stressing the extension of gas pipelines and compressor stations in the country, Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said Monday that the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) has started various assessment studies to strengthen gas distribution networks in the country to provide complete services to final consumers.

Addressing a ceremony to honor the NIGC staff, Zanganeh said expansion of gas storage facilities (whether underground or on-surface) is a high priority for the NIGC which eyes materialization of mass-storage projects in Iran.

He also underlined the necessity of adopting proper managerial measures to reduce at least 30% of gas consumption in the household sector.

"Should the current trend of gas consumption remains the case in the country, Iran will become a mere gas imported in the coming years even if all phases of the South Pars gas field come on-stream," said the Minister, "therefore, energy consumption must by managed [in the household sector]" to reduce consumption as much as possible.
