Efficient Energy Use Requires Policies

TEHRAN April 15 (Shana)--Iran’s Petroleum Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said energy efficiency policies are required to be executed in Iran in order to reduce energy consumption.

Zanganeh said pricing policies would not be sufficient for reducing the energy intensity.

“Energy consumption in Iran is abnormal and this challenge could not be resolved only by implementing pricing policies,” the minister said.

“To that end, a balanced collection of pricing and non-pricing policies as well as energy consumption optimization methods have to be used,” he added.

Zanganeh said more than 80 billion dollars was paid in subsidy to energy carriers in the last calendar year to March.

“Petroleum Ministry welcomes energy consumption reduction projects. Since the framework is buy-back, the costs will be compensated for after the desired result is achieved,” he said.

Zanganeh said cars manufactured in Iran consume lots of energy and are sold at high prices.

“Technological backwardness and clapped out transportation fleet have resulted in energy consumption spike in this sector,” he added.
