Iran Promotes Solar Power Plants

TEHRAN April (Shana)--Energy Ministry is offering incentives to Iranian families to install solar power plants, the ministry said on its website.

It said the ministry will pay for half of the price of the installation of solar power plants for free, Deputy Energy Minister Houshang Falahatian said.

He said that solar power plants have already been installed at schools, adding that they are to be installed at houses.

Falahatian said more than 95 percent of the country's electricity is being generated in thermal power plants.

He said Energy Ministry plans to switch to renewable power plants like solar power plants.

Falahatian said 30 trillion rials is to be invested in the renewable energies sector, adding that wind and solar power plants generating 5,000 megawatts of electricity are to be built in the coming five years.

The official said renewable energies produce less pollution than fossil fuels.
