Iran Petchem Set for Jump

TEHRAN Oct 20 (Shana)--A deputy petroleum minister has said that Iran’s petrochemical sector is poised to experience a fresh jump.

“The current production capacity of petrochemicals is more than 60 million tons a year. With the operation of 67 half-finished projects, this amount will make significant jump,” Mansour Moazzami said.
He said that the second jump in Iran’s petrochemical sector depends on the fact that the National Petrochemical Company (NPC) becomes a development organization.
“We should not forget that improvement in this industry heavily depends on better international conditions,” he said.
Iran produced 40 million tons of petrochemicals in the last calendar year (ended March 20), with $9 billion worth of its products being exported.
The country, which is a major oil exporter, plans to increase its petrochemical exports to $12 billion this year.
The Islamic Republic is determined to become the biggest petrochemical producer in the Middle East.
The country has significantly expanded the range and volume of its petrochemical production over the past few years, and the NPC has become the second largest producer and exporter of petrochemicals in the Middle East after Saudi Arabia.
