Iran Should Boost Electricity Exports, MP

TEHRAN Oct 26 (Shana)--Iran enjoys adequate potentials for changing into a main exporter of electricity in the region, a member of parliament Gholamreza Mesbahi Moqaddam said.

Addressing a meeting on the Economy of Resistance and Future Challenges, Mesbahi Moqaddam said converting raw materials into products is a good mechanism for realization of the targets of the Economy of Resistance.

He added: "In our country we convert 1.7 million barrels of crude oil to oil products and export 1.2 million of crude oil on a "daily basis which is expected to hit 2.5 million barrels per day after lifting sanctions.

The MP continued: "If we turn this amount of crude oil exports to oil products, we will be able to increase value added by tenfold."

He further noted that raising gas, electricity and petrochemical exports are the other mechanisms that could help the "country to realize its targets under Economy of Resistance principles.

According to the MP, the country produces 600 million cubic meters of gas per day, but 500 mcm of the commodity is consumed at home and 24 mcm is exported to Turkey.

“We should change our policies in a way that other neighboring countries like Pakistan, India, Azerbaijan Republic, Turkey and Iraq are linked to Iran’s gas network”, the member of planning, budgetary and auditing commission of parliament said.

He continued: "In addition to Iraq and Azerbaijan Republic which import electricity from Iran, there are other neighboring countries willing to import electricity from Iran and while the country can generate low cost electricity from inexpensive gas, in the same way the country can produce low cost electricity from solar energy to become a main exporter of electricity in the region."

Mesbahi Moqaddam also said output of petrochemical products should reach 100 million tons [per year].

Even though the government is responsible for conducting structural reforms, private sector’s booming activities could help the government to raise its tax income, the MP said.
