Leader: Progress Hinged on "Above-Ground" Resources

The Supreme Leader's recent accounts on the country's real potentialities for development were focused on utilization of the youth as the "above-ground" resources the country enjoys, compared to the underground resources Iran sits atop.

In effect, the statements were reiteration of his previous emphasis on exercising the resistive economy which the Supreme Leader introduced last year.

Iran is said to be home to the largest underground reserves of the world. In regard to oil and natural gas reserves, the country is also reported by world estimates to be the owner of the largest reserves.

Besides, Iran is situated in an exquisite geopolitical region and has direct access to high seas which makes it exemplary to connect the East and West together.

Iran's grandeur, however, is not because of the ample reserves it sits above or where it is locate; it is because of the young, educated of Iranians who always have a say in all aspects of development.

No one ever dares to downplay or question the greatness of these Iranians who are, in fact, seen as the real wealth of the country who function best with the least.

Iranian youths have always shone in the past; and it is by their great potentials that the Supreme Leader refers to them as the "above-ground reserves" which are potent enough to do big things in a very limited period of time if properly heeded.

To properly heed the potentials of the young generation, Iran has developed a scientific outlook for the nation in the first step. Endorsing and fostering the development of knowledge-based foundations is another step in this regard. This second step has been specially considered by Minister of Petroleum Bijan Namdar Zanganeh, since he took office last year and is in the focal point of the Ministry of Petroleum which has so far signed numerous cooperation deals with numerous state-run or private universities.

The Supreme Leader has specially underlined this issue in his statements. Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has continually said that reliance on petrodollars for managing the country is "national profligacy".

"Affluent people tend not to value their money and spend it profligately, and handling the country with merely relying on crude oil revenues is the same," said the Supreme Leader.

The Leader also asserted that managing the country's economy based on petrodollars is like handing over its economy to the world's macro policymakers.

The future of a country that regulates its policies only based on crude oil sales is obvious already, said the Supreme Leader, underlining the recent fluctuations in oil prices in the global markets.

"Instead of relying solely on petrodollars, Iran must rebuild the economy upon its above-ground resources which are the talents and wisdom of the youth to generate knowledge," said the Leader. "Then, no power in the globe will be able to play down any other nation economically."

The Leader also called on all the country's ministries and foundations to make every effort for bolstering the nation's scientific growth.
