High Level of Emissions Alarming, RIPI Chief

TEHRAN Oct 31 (Shana)--The latest estimates show that Iran ranks seven in the world in view of releasing CO2, head of Research Institute of Petroleum Industry (RIPI) Mohammad Reza Katouzian said.

Speaking on Wednesday at Investment Opportunities Seminar held at RIPI, he said it is necessary for some initiatives to be taken for reduction of emissions.

He referred to global warming, rising level of oceans, drought and events like flood and tsunami as alarming, noting a country like Germany with a large economy has decided to dismantle all its nuclear power plants up to 2020. He said, similarly, New Zealand has opted against building nuclear power plants due to opposition by its people who are against rising pollution.

According to Katouzian, releasing a huge amount of greenhouse gases and pollutants such as carbon dioxide and methane have created major environmental challenges.

As much as 600 million tons of carbon dioxide is released in the atmosphere annually which is alarming, he said noting climate change has degraded some places of earth for habitat.

“Today, a great number of companies and businesses have defined a specific strategy for reducing the release of carbon dioxide, a path that we should step in in our country too”, he concluded.
