Naval Forces Protect Tankers

TEHRAN Nov 23 (Shana)--Islamic Republic of Iran’s naval forces so far have protected more than 200 oil tankers and other commercial vessels mainly against pirates.

Commander of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s naval forces Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari made the remarks on Saturday in a news conference, saying Iran’s naval forces took part in more than 150 operations during the eight years of the Sacred Defense (1980-1988) in order to protect oil tankers and other commercial ships' navigation and secured imports and exports via sea routes.

He said: "Destroying Iraq’s naval forces, laying siege to Iraqi ports, preventing imports and exports from Iraq, destroying Albakr and Alommayeh platforms as the main arteries of Iraq’s oil exports and preserving Iran’s supremacy in the Persian Gulf waters were among the main achievements of Pearl Operation which Iran’s naval forces carried out against Iraq’s naval forces during the war.

According to Sayyari, Iran’s naval forces so far have protected and escorted more than 200 oil tankers and other commercial ships, 22 of them belonging to other countries, during its missions and in some cases has reacted militarily against piracy at seas.
