Abdol-Hossein Samari said the sulfur production is rising as new phases of the giant offshore South Pars gas field are becoming operational.
Iran’s gas refineries are currently producing nearly one million tons of sulfur.
Samari said Hasheminejad gas refinery produced nearly 200,000 tons a year of sulfur in 2010 and brought it to 300,000 tons in 2013. He added that it can produce 400,000 tons a year.
He said Iranian oil and gas refineries as well as petrochemical companies are producing two million tons a year of sulfur.
Samari said sulfur, which once cost $8, currently costs $180, adding that sulfur production has regularly witnessed fluctuations.
