Iran, Armenia Enhance Energy Ties

TEHRAN Dec 17 (Shana)--Iran's Minister of Energy Hamid Chitchian said Tehran and Yerevan have agreed to enhance their energy ties including cooperate in constructing new hydro-electric and wind power plants.

"In this edition [of the commission] we reached good agreements and the two countries will cooperate on various economic areas including construction of hydro-electric and wind power plants, launching power networks, environmental cooperation over Aras river, construction of a railway from Iran to Armenia and expansion of joint economic and business activities," said Chitchian speaking on the sidelines of the 12th Iran-Armenia joint economic commission.

The official said different joint committees have been set up to promote cooperation in banking, trade, transport, telecommunications, tourism, higher education, health, and environment as well. 

He added that a special committee has also been set up to follow up the construction of Meghri power plant. 

Construction of a joint hydro-electric power plant on the Aras River was also agreed by the two neighboring states during the commission.
