Iran Cuts Fuel Oil by 33% in Power Plants

TEHRAN Jan 19(Shana)--The consumption of fuel oil by power plants has been reduced by 33%, Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian said.

“Last [calendar] year, 12.3 billion liters of fuel oil was consumed in the country. This amount was reduced to 8.2 billion liters this year, down 33%,” the minister said. Iran’s calendar year starts on March 21.

He said that the cut in the consumption of fuel oil is conducive to clean air.

Chitchian said gasoil consumption has also been down 20% to 7.4 billion liters from a year ago.

“More than one third of total natural gas produced in the country is consumed in power plants for power generation,” he said.

The minister also said that the capacity of renewable energy power plants is to double by March.
