NIGEC to Diversify Exports

TEHRAN Feb 01(Shana)--The National Iranian Gas Export Company (NIGEC) has started preliminary talks with several Turkish companies for electricity exports.

NIGEC’s managing director Alireza Kameli said NIGEC was engaged in talks with several Turkish companies which possess power plants with appropriate financial and technical capabilities.

He said the company has signed a contract with an Iranian company for electricity exports as well. These developments come after Iran's Petroleum Ministry recently announced its readiness for generating and exporting electricity.

NIGEC seeks to diversify in exports, thus it has decided to generate electricity through using gas as fuel, he said.

He noted, to this end, NIGEC was in close cooperation with private sector companies, adding private sector companies are expected to boost their power plants’ efficiency.

According to Kameli, while power plants’ efficiency rate in other countries stands at 50 percent on average, in Iran, the figure hits just 37 percent and that is why Iranian power plants are expected to boost their efficiency to be competitive.
