Protecting Environment a National Duty, Larijani

TEHRAN Feb 23(Shana)--Protecting environment is a public duty and the Majles Center of Research is ready to cooperate with all environmental bodies to prevent degradation.

Parliament speaker Ali Larijani made the remarks on Sunday during the 20th National Meeting of Environment Experts, adding environment and nature is not confined to human life.

He said, "The Earth is facing tough challenges like global warming and climate change which are partly the result of human behavior."

According to him, under the article 50 of the constitution, preserving environment is a public duty and any attempt to degrade it is forbidden.

Following sweeping large part of the country in western borders of the country by dust storm, environmental issues have come to surface as top topics for debate across the country.

Head of Department of Environment (DOE) Masoumeh Ebtekar said yesterday that tackling the dust storm problem requires long term planning.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 14th edition of International Environment Exhibition, Ebtekar told journalists that the administration does not intend to conceal the realities regarding dust particles challenge which needs a long-term planning to overcome.

Ebtekar regretted that some funds which had been earmarked for protection of environment in the draft budget were omitted from next year’s budget bill by Parliament, adding ratification of proposed funds was very important for DOE in order to provide necessary equipment for monitoring, measurement and addressing environmental issues.

“By removing these funds from next year’s budget, there is no doubt that we will face more delays and will lag behind the schedule in tackling environmental problems”, DOE’s chief told the journalists.
