The National Petrochemical Company’s (NPC) public relations quoted Aghcheghlou as saying having access to huge hydrocarbon resources of the country is a unique advantage for petrochemical sector to go ahead with production of finished products.
He noted: "If we continue selling just oil and gas in its crude form, certainly they will be depleted one day and that is why the country should focus on developing petrochemical industry that will create value added and is more desirable."
He continued access to open seas in the south of the country that facilitate exports is the other advantage for developing petrochemical sector.
Developing petrochemical sector will also create jobs and will offset the consequences of recession that overwhelmed the country during past years, he said.
If instead of exports of oil and gas, the country had produced finished products with higher value added the country would have faced fewer problems during sanctions because selling finished products is easier than crude, he concluded.
