Iran Eyes Enhanced Ties with Turkmenistan

TEHRAN July 26 (Shana)--An Iranian deputy minister of petroleum says the country is fully prepared to export goods and offer technical and engineering services to neighboring Turkmenistan under contracts worth up to $1b.

"Iran has over one billion dollars' worth of deals ready to be signed with Turkmenistan," said Amir-Hossein Zamani-Nia, deputy minister for international affairs and trading, on the sidelines of Iranian Petroleum Minister Bijan Zanganeh's Sunday meeting with Turkmen Foreign Minister Raşit Meredow here in Tehran.

He described Turkmenistan as a "good business partner" for Iran, and expressed hope that the country remains so in the future.

Expansion of mutual ties and settlement of previous payments were discussed during the meeting, said the Iranian official.

He said Iranian manufacturers must make every effort to produce quality items to gain a bigger share in Turkmenistan's market that is dominated by Turkish and Russian products.

"Iran produces petrochemicals of much better quality than their rivals; therefore, it is crucial for Iranian companies to spare no effort to perform better in this field," said Zamani-Nia.

Tehran-Ashgabat relations have improved significantly since President Rouhani took office in Iran in 2013.

In a recent visit from Turkmenistan, Iranian president said he was optimistic that the two countries will enjoy over 60 billion dollars of business interactions within the next 10 years.

Iran and Turkmenistan have $4b of mutual business activities.

Turkmenistan is Iran's biggest supplier of natural gas while Iran is the country's most economical route to the regional energy markets.
