Iran Poised to Become Regional Petchem Power

TEHRAN August 22(Shana)—Iran will see its petrochemical sector become a regional power once it implements the numerous projects it has at hand in the industry, deputy managing director of National Petrochemical Company (NPC) said.

Mohammad Hassan Peyvandi said the petrochemical industry in Iran is on the path to progress and will become a regional power by the envisaged 2025 outlook.

"By developing the required infrastructure for turning methanol supplies into propylene, a new opportunity is created for realizing the country's petrochemical goals," said Peyvandi.

He said the country's lack of propylene will be solved by converting methanol to the item.

Iran's methanol output is to hit 20mt/y within the next 5 years, he said, adding this would be a major step in completing the value chain and boosting petrochemical exports by Iran.

Once new phases of the massive South Pars gas field come on-stream, Iran will produce large amounts of ethylene and polyethylene which is a promising prospect for the country.

"Most of the downstream petrochemical industries require propylene for their development," he said.
