Iran Gas Exports Planned to Hit 66bcm/y by 2021

TEHRAN Sept. 01(Shana)--Iran will see its natural gas exports hit 66 billion cubic meters a year by the end of the 6th five-year development plan of the country (2016-2021), a senior gas official said.

Hamid-Reza Araqi, managing director of National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), said on Monday that based on the plan, the country's gas output will reach 1bcm/d from the current 0.5bcm/d by 2021.

Currently, Iran exports 10bcm/y of its gas to neighboring Turkey.

Araqi further said that NIGC has also planned to link 1,170 Iranian cities to the national gas trunklines by 2021.

He also said the number and size of NIGC's projects during the current calendar year which started on March 21 has been unprecedented ever since the company was established 50 years ago.

Iran's 6th Development Plan is a framework for a 5-year perspective of economic performance of the country.

Most of Iran's gas output comes from the joint South Pars gas field in Persian Gulf waters.

South Pars contains 40 trillion cubic meters (tcm) of natural gas.  It covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, 3,700 square kilometers of which are in Iran’s territorial waters in the Persian Gulf. The remaining 6,000 square kilometers are situated in Qatar’s territorial waters.

The gas field is estimated to contain about eight percent of the world’s reserves, and approximately 18 billion barrels of condensate.

The main phase of South Pars gas field came on-stream in March, increasing Iran’s gas production by 100 mcm/d.
