Iran Considering Several Scenarios to Enter Europe Gas Market

TEHRAN Oct. 3 (Shana) – Thanks to holding world’s largest gas reservoirs, Iran is studying a host of schemes for presence in the international and European gas markets in addition to exporting it to neighboring countries, deputy petroleum minister for gas affairs said.

“It is economical to export gas to the neighboring countries. Following the nuclear agreement, it is possible to export gas to Europe through Turkey too,” Hamid-Reza Araqi told Shana.

“There are also experts who suggest that to enter distant global markets, it is better to export gas in LNG because it will become more economical,” he added.

According to Araqi, Iran can export gas through Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan too.

Last week, Araqi who is also Managing Director of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) said meeting the increasing domestic demand as well as boosting export of gas and presence in the global market are among  important plans of the company.

“By completion of the sixth national development plan, export will boost from 10 bcm to 66 bcm annually,” he told a conference on HSE in Gas Industry.

The performance of the gas industry in the past two years has been unprecedented, he said, adding that the trend will continue in the coming two years.

With 33 trillion cubic meters of gas reserves and production capacity of 600 million cubic meters of gas per day, Iran has plans to increase its gas production capacity for domestic and international markets.

In view of gas pipeline network, Iran ranks second in the region after Russia.

Appropriate infrastructure including gas pipeline, compressor stations and gas processing plants plus suitable geographical location provide the possibility for the Islamic republic of Iran to export gas.
