Iran is Ready to Increase Gas Export to Armenia: CEO

TEHRAN Oct.5 (Shana) Iran is prepared to boost its export of gas to Armenia to 2.3 bcm a year by using the vacant capacity of the pipeline between the neighboring countries, said CEO of the National Iranian Gas Export Company (NIGEC).

“The pipeline has an operational capacity of 6 mcm per day while it is currently pumping 1 mcm,” Ali-Reza Kameli told Shana after a meeting between Iranian Petroleum Minister Bijan Zangeneh and the visiting Armenian Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Yervand Zakharian here on Sunday.

“The pipeline has a maximum capacity of 2.3 bcm and a minimum of 1.1 bcm per year. The current 1 mcm a day - which can be increased to 6 mcm – is quite below the (designed) minimum of 3 mcm per day,” he said.

Due to the lack of infrastructure in Armenia, Kameli added, the extra capacity of the gasline is not used yet.
Based on an agreement signed in 2004, in return for delivering natural gas to Armenia, Iran receives electricity from the country at peak demand season.

According to the NIGEC managing director, Zakharian told Zengeneh in the meeting that Armenia plans to build the combined cycle power plant to supply the third 400 KV electricity transmission line to Iran.

Kameli also said that the exchange base of 1 mcm for 3 KW/h must change which will soon negotiated between the two countries.

Following the meeting, Zangeneh said Tehran and Yerevan are negotiating expansion of their energy cooperation with Iran increasing its export of gas to the neighboring Armenia and importing extra electricity in return.

“The details on the exchanges between Iran and Armenia will be discussed while the bilateral framework will be maintained,” he told Shana.

Iran’s total in-place oil reserves have been estimated at more than 560 billion barrels, with about 140 billion barrels of recoverable oil. Heavy and extra heavy varieties of crude oil account for roughly 70-100 billion barrels of the total reserves.

Also Zakharian said the third high-voltage electricity transmission line to Iran will be launched by 2013 for which his country will import extra gas from neighboring Iran.

“In today’s meeting with the Iranian minister, we decided to review the volume of electricity and gas exchange between Iran and Armenia,” he said.

“The third line can increase bilateral trade five times,” the Armenian minister added.
