Petroleum Minister Underlines Anti-Corruption Drive

TEHRAN Oct. 13 (Shana) – Minister of Petroleum Bijan Zangeneh has called for the fight against financial corruption across the country urging the ministry’s staff to exercise extra attention to provide an honest service.

“Due to large amounts of monetary transactions in the oil industry, there is the possibility of corruption. The money in the oil belongs to the public not the industry’s staff,” he told a meeting of the ministry’s Basij (volunteer paramilitary) employees.

He referred to the on-going court hearings of a money launderer of the oil industry and added that the respondent has pocketed billions of dollars and is refusing to return the sum.

On October 3, prosecution in the criminal proceeding on financial corruption in Iran’s crude oil revenues opened with three defendants appearing in Tehran Islamic Revolutionary court.

The main respondent, Babak Zanjani, was jailed in 2013 when charges were brought up against him on misappropriating the bulk of a sum of 2 billion euros of the Ministry of Petroleum’s funds.

Also speaking at the meeting was Basij Force Commander Brigadier General Mohammad-Reza Naqdi who reiterated application of Supreme Leader’s guidelines on the resistance economy.

He suggested turning to renewable energies and avoiding of crude sale of hydrocarbon products as the resistance economy policies to be followed by the Ministry of Petroleum.
