Protecting Gas Corridors Against Terrorism Necessary: Azerbaijan

TEHRAN, Nov. 23 (Shana) - Minister of Industry and Energy of Azerbaijan Republic Natiq Aliyev says world community should take into account the importance of security of gas corridors against terrorism.

Speaking at the 3rd meeting of heads of state and government of member countries of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), the minister, whose country joined the gas exporting countries forum during the 17th ministerial meeting of GECF here on Saturday, said gas exporting countries forum provides a good opportunity for exchanging information about gas market developments.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he said ecology and transit are the other important issues which should be taken into account while the countries plan to exploit their resources.

Aliev thanked all the GECF’s participants for their welcoming remarks on joining Baku to GECF as observer expressing hope gas exporting countries play a great role in long- term decisions in gas market.

The minister further thanked Iranian President Hassan Rouhani for excellent arrangements for holding 3rd GECF Summit and congratulated election of Mohammad Hossein Adeli who was elected for the second time as the secretary general of the Gas Exporting countries for another two years.

Iran hosted two ministerial meetings and the heads of member states of GECF meeting which started three days ago in Tehran and wraps up today.

Previous GECF gas summits were held in Qatar in 2011 and in Moscow in 2013. In the run-up to the summit, the ministerial and expert-level meetings were held on Saturday and in the last two days in Tehran preparing the documents for the approval of the forum’s leaders, according to the Ministry of Petroleum.

GECF is the intergovernmental forum of the world’s leading gas producers that provides a framework for exchange of experience, views, information and data, as well as coordination in gas related developments among member countries.

It consists of 19 main and observer members with its permanent secretariat based in Doha, Qatar. 

Russia, Iran, Qatar, Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Libya, Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, and the United Arab Emirates, are main members of the gas exporting body. Observer countries are the Netherlands, Iraq, Oman, Azerbaijan, Peru, Kazakhstan and Norway.

GECF members account for 42 percent of global gas output, 70 percent of global gas reserves, 40 percent of pipe gas transmission, and 65 percent of global trade of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).
