Bolivia to Host Next GECF Summit Meeting

TEHRAN Nov. 23 (Shana) – Member countries of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) designated Bolivia as the host of the next summit meeting of the inter-governmental body.

Following the 3rd GECF Summit Meeting in Tehran on Monday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the news, calling for naming 2015 as the year of environment.

He underlined natural gas as the cleanest fossil fuel which can function as a bridge from other pollutant fossil energy carriers to clean renewables.

"There is still a long way to the widespread use of renewable energies and gas is the best way which can be used as a bridge to move from conventional fossil fuels to renewables," Rouhani said.

Iran has plans to reach gas output of 1000 mcm/d within the next 2 years, the Iranian president said while addressing a press takeout at the end of the summit meeting.

"For the time being, what matters is moving more quickly for reducing gas consumption and boosting production of the item," he said.

Iran is pursuing plans to export gas to Asia, Europe and the regional neighboring states.

During today's summit meeting, the greatest emphasis was placed on coordination both in market management and introduction of new technologies in the gas industry.

The summit was very significant so long as nearly 70% of gas resources are being possessed by the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) member states, therefore the countries are very significant in energy supply in the gas market.

"These countries can be influential in energy supply markets."

Rouhani also expressed happiness at reinstatement of the body's secretary general at the helm of the forum.

"We are ready for more cooperation with other gas producing countries," Rouhani added.

That 9 heads of state attended the summit is an indication of the fact that countries are realizing that coordination are needed between gas producers, he said.

"This will be beneficial to the environment and producers and consumers of natural gas."

GECF is the intergovernmental forum of the world’s leading gas producers that provides a framework for exchange of experience, views, information and data, as well as coordination in gas related developments among member countries.

It consists of 19 main and observer members with its permanent secretariat based in Doha, Qatar.

Russia, Iran, Qatar, Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Libya, Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, and the United Arab Emirates, are main members of the gas exporting body. Observer countries are the Netherlands, Iraq, Oman, Azerbaijan, Peru, Kazakhstan and Norway.

GECF members account for 42 percent of global gas output, 70 percent of global gas reserves, 40 percent of pipe gas transmission, and 65 percent of global trade of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).
