Oman Calls for Meeting Gas Market Challenges

TEHRAN, Nov. 24 (Shana) - Omani Oil and Gas Minister Mohammed Bin Hamad Al-Rumhy called for the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) to craft effective mechanisms to cope with falling gas price challenges.

Addressing the 3rd GECF Summit in Tehran on Monday night, Al-Rumhy said that Oman had abundant god-given gas reserves expressing hope the country could use the resources for the benefit of its people and other nations.

He said advancement of technology has paved the ground for exports of gas to all markets around the world noting that the blue fuel not only has positive impact on environment but it is an efficient and cost-effective source of energy.

“Gas exporting countries are tasked with securing investment in development of gas resources for the sake of regular earnings”, the minister noted.

Al-Rumhy said the gas market is facing various challenges in view of security and sustainability including plunging LNG prices by two thirds in the markets.

“By continued trend of falling prices, the world community will experience less investment in development of gas industry so that it, in turn, will put limits on the amount of available natural gas for exports as well as meeting world gas market needs.“

GECF, he added, “is expected to find a way out of current problems and convey an alarming message to other international energy organizations.”

Al-Rumhi also thanked the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and government for holding successful GECF Summit in Tehran.

GECF is the intergovernmental forum of the world’s leading gas producers that provides a framework for exchange of experience, views, information and data, as well as coordination in gas related developments among member countries.

It consists of 19 main and observer members with its permanent secretariat based in Doha, Qatar.

Russia, Iran, Qatar, Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Libya, Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, and the United Arab Emirates, are main members of the gas exporting body. Observer countries are the Netherlands, Iraq, Oman, Azerbaijan, Peru, Kazakhstan and Norway.

GECF members account for 42 percent of global gas output, 70 percent of global gas reserves, 40 percent of pipe gas transmission, and 65 percent of global trade of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).
