GECF Members Set to Increase Cooperation: Iran

TEHRAN, Nov. 25 (Shana) – Addition of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) is a sign that cooperation among the intergovernmental body’s members is going to expand, said an official in the Iranian Ministry of Petroleum.

“GECF is expanding and the membership of Azerbaijan with Observer status proved it,” said Mehdi Asali, director general for OPEC and energy forums.

In a televised interview, he referred to convention of the GECF summit meeting in Tehran on Monday and said the forum has plans to become influential in the pricing of gas indirectly in the short-term and directly in the long-term.

“The GECF’s strategic documents which is being drafted stresses synergy among the member states,” he added.

GECF is the forum of the world’s leading gas producers that provides a framework for exchange of experience, views, information and data, as well as coordination in gas related developments among member countries.

It consists of 19 main and observer members with its permanent secretariat based in Doha, Qatar. 

Russia, Iran, Qatar, Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Libya, Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, and the United Arab Emirates, are main members of the gas exporting body. Observer countries are the Netherlands, Iraq, Oman, Azerbaijan, Peru, Kazakhstan and Norway.
