Athens to Settle Debts to Iran under Deal

TEHRAN, Jan. 25 (Shana) -- Iran says Greece will settle its multi-million euro outstanding debt to National Iranian Oil Company for the oil it purchased before the sanctions intensified on Tehran in 2012 under a deal.

Iran’s deputy petroleum minister Amir-Hossein Zamaninia told Shana that Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is scheduled to visit Tehran in March, adding that Tehran and Athens have agreed to settle Greece's debts to Iran under an agreement which will be finalized during Alexis' visit to Tehran.

Last week, Zamaninia paid a two-day visit to Athens to meet with Greek energy officials and prepare arrangements for the Greek premier's visit from Tehran in March.

"During the Greek official's visit to Iran, the two country's energy deals will be finalized," he said.

Amir Hossein Zamaninia and his Greek counterpart Panos Skourletis met in Athens on Friday.

The two deputy ministers also attended talks between executives from Hellenic Petroleum and NIOC.

Under the deal, the refiner will start buying oil from Iran immediately and will settle its multi-million euro outstanding debt to NIOC, Hellenic Petroleum said in a bourse filing, according to Reuters.

Hellenic Petroleum is estimated to owe Iran around $550-600 million for oil it bought before the sanctions but has said it was unable to pay when the international embargo was imposed.

Zamaninia also voice Iranian Ministry of Petroleum's interest to engage private sector investors in construction of Hellenic refinery.
