Iran Ships 1st Petchem Cargo to Europe

TEHRAN, Feb. 29 (Shana) -- Iran says it has shipped its first petrochemical consignment to Europe after implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

Chairman of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) Mohammad Saeidi said a container ship of the cargo will presently berth at a European port.

Speaking on the sidelines of a trade seminar in Tehran, the official said the shipment was done for the first time in 5 years.

"This is very great that we could resume shipments to Europe after five years," Saiedi said.

He said Iran is one of the few countries that enjoy a marine transportation fleet.

During the sanctions era, European countries disallowed Iranian ships to call at their ports, he added.

IRISL chief said removal of sanctions and implementation of JCPOA have paved the way for taking fresh measures to reopen the sea link and shipping routes to Europe.

IRISL has successfully lobbied with Germany and Italy to establish a joint shipping company to cover northern and southern Europe with their services, Saeidi added.
