Iran, South Africa to Cooperate on GTL, Oil Blending

TEHRAN, April 25 (Shana) –- Head of Iran's Research Institute of Petroleum Industry (RIPI) said the institute has signed an agreement with South Africa for development gas-to-liquids (GTL) and crude oil blending technologies.

Hamie Reza Katouzian told Shana that RIPI is currently cooperating with state-run PetroSA Company in developing slurry reactors and according to the newly-singed agreement, the African side will invest in this regard.

He said crude oil blending is another area that the two sides have agreed to engage in joint research and technology development.

RIPI Head Katouzian and PetroSA deputy chairman signed the deal on Sunday in Tehran.

The agreement was signed during the state visit to Tehran by South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his South African counterpart were present in the ceremony held to sign the deal in Tehran.

Zuma arrived in Tehran on Sunday heading a 180-member politico-economic delegation. He is visiting the Islamic Republic at the invitation of President Rouhani to discuss ways to strengthen relations between the two countries.

RIPI has long been seeking to develop GTL technology for production of clear fuel and the deal will be a push to scale up its efforts to achieve state-of-the-art methods for production of the fuel.

South Africa is a leading country in GTL technologies in the world.

Crude oil blending is often undertaken to increase the sale price or process-ability of a lower grade crude oil by blending it with a higher grade, higher price crude. The objective is to produce blended crude oil to a target specification at the lowest cost using the minimum higher cost crude oil.
