Iran Eyes 1,000 Megawatts of Power Output from Renewables by 2021

TEHRAN, Oct 25 (Shana) – Deputy Iranian Energy Minister Alireza Daemi says Iran will be generating 1,000 megawatts of electricity from renewable energy resources by the end of the 6th five-year development plan (2016-2021).

Addressing the 27th session of the energy committee of Tehran Chamber of Commerce on Monday, Daemi said his ministry has prioritized transfer of technical savvy, investment in domestic projects and formation of joint ventures in cooperation with foreign companies.

He said studies indicate that Iran's temperature has risen by an average of 2 degrees from 1980 to 2000, adding estimates show that the number may more than double by 2050.

Daemi said the installed capacity of Iran's power plants is 75,000 megawatts of which less than 1% belongs to renewable resources.

He further said plans are under way to boost the country's total power generation from renewable resources to 1,000 megawatts by 2021.
