TEHRAN - Iran has signed a deal with Belgium's Exmar to build 10 liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, state television reported yesterday.

"We can build 10 LNG carriers in Iran each worth $240 million. The whole contract will be worth $2.4 billion," Industry Minister Alireza Tahmasbi said. The Iranian shipbuilders will be SADRA. Iran is penciled in to start production of LNG, gas supercooled to liquid for loading onto tankers, in 2009. But commercial and political complications have weighed on the projects to develop LNG, in part because of the involvement of foreign contractors such as Shell, Total and BG. PIN/REUTERS
