TEHRAN – The Joint Iran-India LNG (liquefied natural gas) Consortium, which is yet to be esdtablished, is to place an order for 8 new carriers valued at $1.6b as its first step for LNG exports.

Four of the ships will have a capacity of 45,000 cubic meters of LNG each, a news report said on Wednesday. Upon placing the order, the time of delivery is expected to be 2010 and the fleet would be carrying 7.5m tons of liquefied gas to India annually. Furthermore, the Iranian side has agreed that the Iran-India Shipping Line, an Iranian-Indian joint venture, to represent Iran in the consortium but the Indian side has not yet introduced any company to this end. At present, Iran has 3 LNG projects underway that one of them will be implemented by National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and the other two are joint ventures with foreign partners. The Pars LNG Project is going to be underway with cooperation of Total and the Parsian Project employs the joint effort of Shell and Repsol of Spain.
