HONG KONG - Iranian Minister of Commerce Massoud Mir-Kazemi here Sunday termed the country's first participation in the 6th ministerial conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) as an observer country as fruitful.

"Iran's active participation was aimed at becoming familiar with the literature of the trade negotiations at the WTO as well as the problems faced by the poor, less developed, developing and developed countries," Mir-Kazemi told IRNA on the last day of the conference. He said the Iranian delegation held talks with various delegations participating in the conference as well as ministers of nine WTO member states on their experiences on joining the organization. "Iran has its own concerns regarding the WTO. Iran, in its way to join the organization, can benefit from experiences of these states particularly Saudi Arabia which has been recently accepted as a new member. "In order to join the WTO, Iran should draw plans to make developments in production and services. It should also adopt itself with the WTO monetary, banking, insurance and customs directions and regulations," he said. Iranian commerce minister arrived in Hong Kong Wednesday night to attend the WTO conference. He held meetings with ministers of commerce and trade of Iraq, Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Bulgaria, Bangladesh, Morocco, Sri Lanka and secretary general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
