TEHRAN – Official in charge of intelligent fuel card noted that 1.6 million people have registered to get the cards up to yesterday.

Nasser Sajjadi told reporters today that there is no accurate figure on the number of cars registered at Police Department, but the number is expected to hit 2 million. The official stated that according to law, all motor vehicles should be using intelligent cards for buying fuel as of April 21, 2006. He added that the main problem pertains to motorcycles because they are not traded officially, but through note of hand, there is no accurate statistics on motorcycles. He added that motorcyclists requesting the cards should enroll through a 3-4 month period. “Gathering information is a small part of the project and providing needed infrastructures of issuing intelligent cards is very important,” he opined. The official stated that since intelligent cards can be used in online and off-line modes, if phone call is interrupted, it would not affect use of such cards. He noted that at present, only 200 out of 2,200 gas stations are not connected to national telecommunications network. The official noted that intelligent fuel card project goes beyond Ministry of Petroleums jurisdiction and involves other state bodies too. Sajjadi noted that a major advantage of such cards is to prevent fuel smuggling to neighboring countries.
