ROME - Italian oil and gas giant Eni SpA said Monday it has discovered a new oil field in the South China Sea, some 180 kilometers (112 miles) southeast of Hong Kong.

After drilling a well at a depth of more than 3,900 meters (12,800 feet), Eni's tests yielded a daily production of around 5,000 barrels of "excellent quality" oil, the company said in a statement. Eni said the oil field was located in the Pearl Mouth Basin and is being developed by a consortium led by China National Offshore Oil Corp., Eni, and U.S. oil company Chevron Corp. PIN/AP
