TEHRAN – There are many ambiguities surrounding oil field in Caspian Sea including geophysical issues, marine structures technology, drilling, as well as environmental issues and, therefore, research enjoys special importance in upstream activities in such fields.

Ahmad Talebi, head of research and development department of Caspian Oil Company, told Petroenergy Information Network that exploration and oil extraction activities in Caspian Sea are facing many challenges including deep waters as well as distance from the shore to oil fields. He noted that oil fields in the Caspian Sea are located at a depth of 700-800 m and compared it to Persian Gulf where oil fields are not more than 70-100 m deep and said, “Caspian Sea is among deep waters and only few countries enjoy needed technology for exploring oil in deep waters.” Talebi stated that since most oil and gas fields onshore and in superficial waters have been discovered, increasing attention is being paid to deep and ultra-deep waters for discovering new resources. He noted that research and development department of Caspian Oil Company was established in 2002 according to a decision made by Research and Development Department of the National Iranian Oil Company and is affiliated to Caspian Oil Company.
