ALGIERS - Algerian Foreign Minister Mohamed Bedjaoui here Sunday stressed Iran's right to pursue nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

Bedjaoui made the remark at a meeting with the visiting Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African Affairs Mohammad-Reza Baqeri. Peaceful use of nuclear energy is an undeniable right of all countries, including the Islamic Republic of Iran, he stressed. He described Tehran-Algiers relations at the bilateral and international levels as "promising," and called for further consolidation of trade and economic cooperation with Tehran. Baqeri, for his part, spoke briefly of measures taken by Tehran to boost transparency in its nuclear activities, including an ongoing invitation to European and Persian Gulf neighboring states to participate in Iran's nuclear programs, and reiterated that renewed pressures imposed by Western countries on Iran because of its nuclear programs were politically motivated. Pointing to latest developments in Iraq and Palestine, he said he was confident "establishment of a new government in Iraq will pave the ground for speedy withdrawal of foreign powers." He praised the positive trend in bilateral ties between Tehran and Algiers in the past two years and urged strengthening of their economic and industrial cooperation. Baqeri expressed his country's full readiness to expand ties with Algeria in all fields. Avenues for boosting bilateral relations, enhanced cooperation of the two countries' foreign ministries, issues of interest to the Islamic world, the Middle East and north Africa were the other subjects discussed in the meeting.
