BUDAPEST -- Russian gas deliveries to Hungary are falling short of requested volumes by around 25 percent, local media said on Thursday. Cold weather is being blamed for the situation.

Sandor Kantor, spokesman of the Hungarian oil company MOL, said natural gas supplies from Russia are significantly lower than normal at the Hungarian-Ukrainian border feeding point, but deliveries otherwise comply with the average amount outlined by the contract. On Wednesday, countries including Italy, Croatia and Hungary reported decreased supplies of Russian gas from the state- controlled monopoly, OAO Gazprom. This was being attributed to domestic demand in Russia. "As soon as the temperature in Russia falls to 25-40 degrees below zero (Celsius), consumption of gas within the country rises and exports fall," Kantor said, adding, "this has happened before." Mol has asked its 34 large consumers, mostly power stations, to temporarily switch to oil fuelling from 0600 local time on Thursday. Daily gas consumption in Hungary is 96 million cubic meters, half of which comes from abroad. PIN/XINHUA
