TEHRAN - Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani here Tuesday stressed the need for continuation of negotiations to settle Iran's nuclear case.

Larijani made the remark while talking to reporters in reaction to a decision made by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain) plus Germany on Tuesday that the Thursday IAEA meeting should report Iran to the UNSC over its nuclear program. "I still believe we can obtain good results through negotiations," he said. He recommended the Group 5+1 to follow up Iran's nuclear case through constructive talks. In response to a question on consequences of Iran's referral to the Security Council and suspension of the country's voluntary cooperation, he said, "We do not welcome this and still believe we can settle the issue peacefully." A reporter asked Larijani whether Russia, as a member of the Group 5+1 which also agreed to Iran's referral to the UNSC, would change its stance during upcoming talks with senior Iranian officials in Tehran. "I am not aware of Russia's stance yet. Russian officials have not clarified their stance. Such stance should be determined in their presence. "Iran's right for access to peaceful nuclear technology should be officially recognized. No one should resist the Iranian nation's will. "Iran will accept nothing beyond the framework of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)." Pointing to 'look to the East policy', the SNSC secretary added, "Iran always makes decisions based on its national interests. Our relations with the East has been defined within the framework of our national interests." The statement issued by the group reiterated that the six countries agreed that this week's extraordinary meeting of IAEA Board of Governors should take necessary measures to report Iran's nuclear case to the UN Security Council. The six countries also agreed that the UNSC should await a report to be presented by the IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei to the March meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors before deciding to take action to reinforce the authority of the IAEA process, the statement said. This is while the Western mass media, including those of the US, have intensified their propaganda campaign against the Islamic Republic of Iran. PIN/IRNA
