EU Keen on Preventing US Sanctions on Iran: Official

TEHRAN (Shana) -- A senior Iranian energy official said: "The political will between Iran and the European Union has been preserved, and these countries are carrying out mechanisms to prevent re-imposition of US sanctions."

Amir Hossein Zamaninia, deputy petroleum minister for international affairs and trading, told a radio interview that EU members did not seek restricted trade with Iran based on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), adding that relations after implementation of the deal were normalized to some extent, although some banking problems were still in place.

"The political will of the 28 EU member states has now been announced to Iran and they want to prevent US extraterritorial sanctions against European companies for working with Iran."

The official further said that for Iran crude oil sale without any banking restrictions was a priority, adding the issue of shipping, tankers and insurance were also very important for Iran.

He said one of the mechanisms picked by EU to prevent sanctions on Iran was direct cooperation of several European banks with Iran's central bank so that it could transfer revenues from oil, gas condensate and petrochemical sales.

Zamaninia further said most major European companies whose businesses primarily lied in the US soil would not opt for such preventive mechanisms by EU to work with Iran but those that had less businesses running in the US or with the country would decide to opt for such mechanisms to work with Iran.

He further said talks were under way for examining various aspects of this mechanism between the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and EU officials.
