MASHHAD - Iran is aiming to produce 20,000 megawatts of electrical power from its nuclear power plants, the chairman of Majlis' National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, said here Tuesday.

"Electricity generation from nuclear energy is a small part of the nuclear energy program. Iran's progress in many other scientific fields will depend on production of this clean energy. "Iran plans to use the nuclear energy program envisioned during the pre-revolution era, when the West had close relations with Iran. At that time, the Western states had accepted generation of 23,000 megawatts of electricity in Iran from nuclear energy," he said. "At that time, energy countries of the world including the United States, France and Russia had cooperation agreements with Iran for production of nuclear energy. "But after the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran (1979), they cut cooperation with Iran and said continuation of Iran's nuclear activities would not be in the interest of peace," he added. Boroujerdi further accused the West of being biased in their policies with regard to nuclear energy, saying their decisions had no scientific or logical basis but were politically motivated. "Iran's strategic (nuclear) policy is quite transparent. It moves forward within the framework of rules and regulations of the Non-Prolifertaion Treaty (NPT) and discusses issues with the West." He expressed regret that "Western states continue to accuse Iran of hiding a nuclear weapons program when its activities have been open to inspection based on rules and regulations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
