VIENNA - The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Wednesday that it has been informed by the Iranian mission in the Vienna-based international organization that Iran was to resume nuclear research work on Jan 9.

Iran last year announced it was voluntarily suspending nuclear activities as a confidence-building measure. The IAEA secretariat said IAEA Director-General Mohamed ElBaradei briefy outlined Iran's decision to the 35 member states of the IAEA Board of Govornors. ElBaradei, in a statement on Tuesday, called for Iran to explain its decision to resume nuclear research. He said the IAEA Board of Governors welcomed the suspension of uranium enrichment activities by Iran as a confidence-building measure. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Tuesday that his government had informed in a letter the agency chief that Iran was determined to continue nuclear research. Addressing a Cabinet-Majlis joint session, Ahmadinejad said that there were no existing restrictions on nuclear research. As to the nuclear issue, Iran has undertaken the most comprehensive diplomacy." The president outlined the current status of the nuclear dispute, and said "Iran has showed exceptional magnanimity in the two previous administrations but the talks have only resulted in increasing expectations on the Islamic Republic of Iran." "We pursue an active foreign policy. We are aware of our strengths and the demands in the international arena." PIN/IRNA
