TEHRAN – DMD (Demercaptanization Distillate) technology will soon take place of older American and French methods for removing mercaptan and other sulfur compounds from sour oil varieties.

Mansour Bazmy, director of DMD process at Research Institute for Petroleum Industry noted that most Iranian crude oil varieties are sour and need Demercaptanization, which is currently being carried out in most Iranian refineries through American and sometimes, French methods. He noted that due to sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran, the American technology should have been taken from European branches of American companies, which was not economically justifiable. Bazmy noted that DMD is preferable over older methods both economically and technically and has been used at Research Institute for Petroleum Industry as pilot which has proved its efficiency beyond any doubt. DMD technology has been invented by Research Institute for Petroleum Industry specialists and is going through international registration formalities. He said early negotiations for marketing the technology in Persian Gulf littoral countries have been carried out and it is expected to carry an important role in oil and gas refineries of regional countries.
